This particular home already had a large electrical service of 320 amps since the home is 100% electric without any natural gas available in the neighborhood. This is more common than you would think, especially outside the city limits or in the countryside. The electrical service was already loaded to the maximum allowable amperage and could not accommodate anything else.
After adding a new swimming pool/spa with 3 pump motors, lights, spa air blower and pool water chiller that pulls 50 amps by itself, the new electrical load was an additional 100 amps.
So, we completely upgraded the service to 500 amps (which is the next size up from 320 amps), which is unusually large for a single family home, but certainly not unheard of in this industry.
