Outdoor Kitchen/Cabana Recessed Can Lights and Ceiling Fans

February 20, 2024

The first photo is a complete installation by our electrical team showing the proper way lights, fans and outdoor electrical are supposed to look on a completed job for a www.OutdoorLiving-PoolAndPatio.com customer.

These installations require two (2) trips to the job. One is to install in all the wiring, outlet boxes, switch boxes, ceiling boxes, ceiling fan rated boxes, recessed can housing that are approved for closed ceilings with no air flow, and run the cables to a point outside of the ceiling that will soon be closed and finished by a professional trim carpenter. This is all performed before closing up the ceiling with any material.

The city electrical inspector will then look at the job before anything is allowed to be covered so they can make sure the proper and approved type electrical wire, boxes and recessed can housings are being installed. Especially ceiling fan rated electrical boxes!

Years ago, ceiling fan rated boxes did not exist. Any plastic or metal box was used to hold the fan.  Now the new ceiling fan boxes come with much larger screws and hardware, and are rated for 35 pounds of constant torque from the fan being turned on and off, and 70 pound overall weight for a ceiling fan. a They can also be used for up to 100 pounds for a chandelier. After the electrical rough-in inspection, the ceiling gets finished by the trim carpenter and painted if necessary, all of the masonry and plumbing is completed, and countertops installed.

Then we return and install all of the outlets, switches, fans, lights and recessed can trims.  Then another electrical inspection is made by the city electrical inspector so that approved outdoor rated plugs, switches, proper GFCI protection, in-use covers for outlets, and lighting are all installed, job is completed and operational.  The 2nd photo was performed by one of our competitors.  Which one would you like in your new Kitchen/Cabana?
